SAT International Test Dates Guide (2019 and 2020)
SAT International Test Dates Guide (2019 and 2020) SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Here we look at international SAT test dates for the the 2019ââ¬â2020 year. The test months haven't changed since last year, but the dates have! We've recorded what we've learned in this article. Upcoming SAT Test Days in 2019 and 2020 We've scoured the College Board website to get the most up to date predictions for international test dates. In addition, the regular deadline for the domestic SAT is the same as the only and final deadline for the international test: there is no late registration if you are taking the SAT outside of the US. We've developed a thorough guide to considering the best dates for you that details the four test date factors you should consider. You should also plan ahead and think about whether you want to take the SAT more than once. Note that the main difference between International and Domestic testing is that there are fewer international test dates and no late registration for international students. The major implication of this is that you can't always wait for the last test's score to come out before you sign up for the next possible SAT test date. For example, a domestic student can wait until her March test comes back, and if she did badly, she can register late for the May SAT. Depending on if March scores come out in time, international students might not be able to do this. However, this is not a big loss: few students would want to take two tests in a row because there really isn't time to improve or study in such a short amount of time. Second, if money is not an issue, international students can simply preemptively register for two dates in a row, and then cancel the second test date if they do well on the first test. The cost of cancellation is only the monetary cost of the test. Otherwise, international testing and domestic testing have more similarities than differences! Expanded and Extended
Expanded and Extended Expanded and Extended Expanded and Extended By Maeve Maddox Tali asks, What is the difference between extended and expanded When do you use either? Although extend and expand can be used interchangeably in some contexts, extend applies to things that are being stretched out, while expand applies to things that are spread out. One implies length; the other area. If you extend your arm, for example, you stretch it out, making it longer. If your waist expands, its getting larger. As a business expands, or gets larger, it may extend its opening hours. Extend comes from a word meaning to stretch out, lengthen. (Latin extendere, stretch out, from ex out + tendere, to stretch.) Expand comes from a word meaning spread out, spread flat. (Latin ex out + pandere to spread, stretch. In this quotation that uses both words, extend conveys a lengthening of time, while expand indicates that more people will be covered by the credit: On Wednesday, the Senate voted to extend and expand the tax credit to include many buyers who already own homes. Here are some uses of both words: Laguna College of Art and Design officials hope to expand the library and build a new gallery. Availability of the iPad will expand to all of Best Buys U.S. stores Sessions Predicts Congress Will Extend Tax Cuts After Election Investigators are going to extend the probe until February 2011 A contract might be expanded to include additional specifications, or extended to last for a longer period: BP could expand the contract of a local disaster relief company, giving it the power to call in additional resources to defend Mobile Bay in the event its threatened by oilâ⬠¦ Last seasons UEFA Champions League runners-up, Bayern Munich, have decided to extend the contract of Coach Louis van Gaal. When expanded and extended are used as adjectives, context determines meaning: This article explains how to allocate memory and set up your system to run both expanded and extended memory. The Extended Mind refers to an emerging conceptâ⬠¦that addresses the question as to the division point between the mind and the environmentâ⬠¦ I have returned [from my travels] with an expanded mind and an open heart. Bottom line: Choose expand if what youre talking about is getting wider, becoming more inclusive, or taking up more space. Historical events that have shaped America Essay
Historical events that have shaped America - Essay Example When breaking down the essence of America in this way, it becomes possible for a few key events to float to the top of each category as being critical in the evolution of the United States. Of course, this determination is largely a matter of opinion. Nevertheless, a concrete case can be made for three major historical developments as the most essential factors shaping America. In the political realm, the Enlightenment is the first factor. In the economic realm, the Industrial Revolution is the second factor. And in the military realm, World War II is the third factor. Taken together, these three factors comprise a triad of events in whose absence the America we know today could never have possibly come into being. The Enlightenment was arguably the most important historical event influencing the United States governmental and political system. Not only did it spawn a philosophy of good government and a view of human rights that directly impacted the thinking of the Founding Fathers as they crafted the American system of government, but it also indirectly informed modern views of social justice that precipitated such developments as the Civil Rights movement, universal suffrage, and social security. The Enlightenment, while more of a European phenomenon than an American one, took place at just the right time, directly preceding the American Revolution and heavily influencing the thinking of the great men who would be instrumental in setting the initial course of America (http://www.wsu.edu/dee/AMERICA/ENLIGHT.HTM). The Enlightenment was the point in history when some of the most influential political philosophers of history wrote their seminal works. These include the writings of John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes, and John Stuart Mill. Together, these great thinkers laid out the philosophical underpinnings of what would become the American government. Such concepts as separation of powers, the right to life, liberty and property, the importance of a strong central government, and the common good, all came into play as the Framers developed their formula of "good government" that is laid out within the U.S. Constitution. These "enlightened" thinkers, among others, brought about a fundamental shift in the way humans viewed their world and their natural place in it. The Enlightenment essentially set the philosophical parameters surrounding the way humans interact with one another and agree to govern one another. The Founding Fathers, most notably James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, injected a heavy dose of Enlightenment philosophy into the American governmental system, with its protection against the tyranny of the majority, its preservation of individual liberty and property rights, and its perpetuation of the sovereignty of the states in the face of a strong central government. As such, the Enlightenment provided the cornerstone of American government, and was perhaps the most critical world historical event shaping America. The Industrial Revolution Just as the Enlightenment was key to America's political development, the Industrial Revo

2pg response to a cultural experience Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
2pg response to a cultural experience - Essay Example India and Pakistan share almost similar cultural roots and most of the cultural practices are same and they tend to show the same kind of emotions and sentiments while interacting with people outside their own culture. One of the most striking things about this particular culture experience would be the fact that Pakistanis and Indians tend to share the same level of attitude towards life. They are not so disciplined as most of the people in west tend to be because their life is mostly haphazard in nature without any concrete planning in their life. The most important thing of my cultural experience with them was the fact they tend to view and honor women in more formal way as compared to the western people. Their respect and attitude towards women is entirely different as most of them are shy at disclosing their emotions and sentiments to them. Mostly you would find them shy and uncomfortable while talking to women. Their dresses are mostly comfortable and they prefer to wear cloths which provide more comfort than style. This distinguishes them because sometimes you may find them little bit more informal than usual as compared to Western people. My overall cultural experience has been excellent as it has been a learning experience for me. This is because of the fact that I have been able to learn an entirely different attitude towards life as whole and little things in general. India and Pakistan give you an excellent cultural experience to live and experience a culture which is more hospitable, little bit less tolerant, strict in it core beliefs as well as values and give a lot of attention to more closer bonds between

King Hrothgar Essay Example for Free
King Hrothgar Essay King Hrothgar and his Danish army celebrated their victory in battles in a lavish hall called Heorot. Grendel is angered by the celebration and killed thirty soldiers while sleeping in the hall. For more than a decade, the King could not stop the monster. Beowulf, prince of Geats, arrived in the kingdom one day and helped Hrothgarââ¬â¢s army fight Grendel in exchange for treasures. In a battle that ensued one night, Beowulf defeated Grendel. Unknown to the warriors, Grendelââ¬â¢s mother plotted a revenge for the death of her son. Grendelââ¬â¢s mother attacked Heorot one night and took Aeschere, the chief advisor of Hrothgar. Beowulf went to the lair of Grendelââ¬â¢s mother after requesting from the king that the treasures, in case he was not able return, be given to King Hygelac, his uncle. Eventually, Beowulf was able to defeat Grendelââ¬â¢s mother and was able to return alive. Beowulf and his soldiers returned home, and after a few years he was king of the Geats. One day a thief stole a treasure from the dragon in a cave. Angered, the dragon went to town and burned the houses one night. Beowulf decided to avenge his people by going to the cave and killing the dragon. Beowulf, despite his old age, was able to defeat the dragon and take the treasure although he was deeply wounded. In the end, Beowulf died from the battle wounds and was buried together with the treasures in a tomb. Part 2 What religious or quasi-religious traditions might the workââ¬â¢s story, characters, elements, or objects be compared to or affiliated with? Why? a. Grendel is considered to be the symbol of all things evil. Beowulfââ¬â¢s defeat of Grendel and Grendelââ¬â¢s mother signify that good will always conquer evil in conjunction with pagan and Christian beliefs about good and evil. b. Beowulf has superhuman characteristics such as his great strength. Similarly, Jesus Christ also had superhuman or supernatural characteristics as elaborated throughout the text of the Holy Bible. Like Beowulf, Jesus Christ also had several encounters with things that are evil in his lifetime. For instance, there was a time when Christ was put into the test by the devil guised as a snake in the desert. After several tests, Christ was able to surpass the tests set forth by the devil which, in essence, signifies the idea that good always triumphs over evil in the end. Beowulf, on the other hand, had at least three encounters with the evil: the dragon, Grendel and Grendelââ¬â¢s mother. c. Beowulfââ¬â¢s quest for victory and the treasures that go with his victories signify the pagan preoccupation with material things in the world. Even death cannot separate Beowulf from his possession as exemplified in the scene where he was buried along with his treasures from his battles. Christianity, on the other hand, favors the life that is more focused on the spiritual aspect rather on the material aspect. Here we see a stark contrast between the pagan and Christian attitude towards life, death and physical possessions. d. The idea that Beowulf was buried in a barrow or a burial mound near the sea after being burned into ashes signifies that the people were following Norse pagan beliefs. It was believed that the fire transferred the deceased to Valhalla or the hall of the slain in Asgard, a city in Norse mythology. e. In the Book of Revelation chapter 28 verse 1, a lake is described as a body of water that ââ¬Å"burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death. â⬠This can be aptly similar to the home of Grendel and Grendelââ¬â¢s mother which is the lake that also burns with fire.

Personal Statement Prompt #2 Essay
PERSONAL STATEMENT Prompt #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are? Iââ¬â¢ve never been so interested in my spiritual life, my religion, and my service to others as I have been these past three years. One of the proudest moments of my life is when I was accepted into my schoolââ¬â¢s LIFE team, which stands for Living in Faith Experience. The trips, retreats, and activities that I have shared with my peers have formed me into a completely new person and have allowed me to experience things that I wouldnââ¬â¢t have been able to experience on my own. Being able to be a part of the LIFE team is an accomplishment that has given me many opportunities, and has showed me ways that I can go out into the world and grab hold of the millions of other opportunities that awaits me. This particular team isnââ¬â¢t like the sports a nd organizations that my school offers. You first have to be nominated by three teachers or administrators, which allows you to receive an application. The end of my freshman year, I received an application, and I was confused. I wasnââ¬â¢t too sure of what exactly the team was, except for the fact they were religious and helped the campus minister out. The application did not only involve basic information, it also required short answers for approximately 15 questions. I ignored the fact that it was so time consuming because I enjoyed having to think about the answers, which were new to me. Later in the week, I was called into our Campus Ministerââ¬â¢s office and was interviewed. The questions allowed me, for once, to just be me and talk about what Iââ¬â¢ve been through and what I want for my future. Just being myself paid off, in a way that changed my whole high school career and life. The person that LIFE team has helped make me is much more open, compassionate, and helpful. From small groups on the retreats, large group discussions in class, and getting guidance through liturgies, I have opened up to where I can more easily express myself. I learned the importance of trusting people and being trusted. From being a servant leader, I have deepened my qualities of compassion and being helpful. LIFE team is focused on being good leaders for others, while being a servant to them and to Christ. Iââ¬â¢m able to learn something and actually feel anxious to go and teach others the same. I couldnââ¬â¢t be more proud of the wayà that Iââ¬â¢ve progressed in my spiritual knowledge, deepened in my faith, and have become much more willing to open up and try new things. Being a part of the LIFE team for these past 3 years is an accomplishment for myself, a contribution to our school and society, and has helped me to better portray the qualities that I want and need to expose in order to be the best person that I can be.

ââ¬ËFriendship Changes Its Meaning and Function Through the Life Course Essay
In many western societies, friendship is portrayed in a very positive and desirable light, and most of all something people have the freedom to choose, unlike kinship. However as examined further in this essay, friendship means and functions as many different things to different people and can be influenced by an array of different social factors. There are various stages in the life-course that provide both opportunities and threats to the development and maintenance of friendships, yet it is evident that friendship does change and evolve in meaning and function through the life course. Some sociologists believe that social change has affected the significance of friendship, and thus changed its function throughout the life course. Due to social change, choice and reciprocity have become highly valued in relationships; which is expected in todayââ¬â¢s post-industrial society. Many see the traditional ââ¬Ënuclearââ¬â¢ family as diminishing. This can be explained by the individualisation thesis (Giddens 1992, Ulrich Beck and Beck Gersheim 1995), who argue that set traditions and social rules are in decline, thus giving rise to voluntarism and democracy distinct from kinship; which can be recognised in the notion of the ââ¬Ëpure relationshipââ¬â¢ (Giddens 1992). Therefore friendship can be seen as the ideal relationship in society; differing much from the ââ¬Ëfixedââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëgivenââ¬â¢ relationships with kin and the community, which are seen to be declining in significance. This has allowed friends to take the roles traditionally formed by families. The idea of ââ¬Ëfamilies of choiceââ¬â¢ (Weeks et al 2001:9) suggests that trends such as increasing cohabitation, divorce rates, greater social and geographical mobility, increasing levels of female education, increased participation of females in the labour market, and the growth of non-heterosexual household arrangements along with a strong sense of individualization have led to families of choice. This social suffusion of family and friends is especially evident amongst non-heterosexuals, due to their exclusion from the ââ¬Ëfamilyââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëmarriageââ¬â¢ in which they havenââ¬â¢t received support from families; theyââ¬â¢ve chosen their own networks of relationships conceived as families. However it is important not to overstate the significance of friendship compared to relationships with family with much empirical evidence stating family relationships still remain significant. Firstly, it is important to recognise that there isnââ¬â¢t a single universal definition of friendship; which can cause many sociologists to encounter problems when researching the notion of friendship, and thus how its meaning and function may change and evolve through the life course. There are many different forms of friendships, ranging from diverse and complex friendships which are ever-changing and evolving. Whether it is those we file in our address books to those who have a profound presence in our lives. People attach the label ââ¬Ëfriendââ¬â¢ to those whom theyââ¬â¢ve simply had a pleasant association with or as for as those who theyââ¬â¢ve shared a lifelong relationship with. Some believe it is ââ¬Ëthe valuing of the other person for whatever is perceived as their unique and pleasing qualitiesââ¬â¢ (Wright 1978), which is said to be a defining characteristic. Research into what friendship means, reveals friendship as being voluntary rather than obligatory. Though as explored further this element of choice of who we categorise as our friends, can be highly influenced by other social factors and elements of homophily; which changes as we enter different stages of the life course. There is much diversity within friendship, with every relationship being completely unique. There are many recurrent types of friendships, such as associates, useful contacts, favour friends and a fun friend which are categorized as a simple friend, which ranges to a helpmate, comforter, confidant and a soul mate; which constitute towards a complex friendship. Research has found that the degree of intimacy of a friendship is affected by the amount of time friends have known each other. Furthermore, Pahl and Spencer categories the types of friendships people have in their personal communities into different types of friendship repertoire. They identify between the basic, intense, focal and broad repertoire, these typologies allow us recognise that some friendships strengthen in meaning whereas some even tend to get lost ad fade away as people enter different stages of the life course. Through stages in the life course such as leaving school, going to college, starting work, living with a partner/getting married, having children, getting divorced, moving home and retiring etc, can provide new opportunities for friendship whilst even threaten existing ones. Kinship ties and especially primary kinship ties generally continue in some form, whereas change in friendship is routine and normal. Indeed some friendships are long-term with some even life-long, although for the majority this isnââ¬â¢t the case. Usually friends occupy similar social positions to one another; tending to be the same age, be of a similar class position, same gender and occupy similar positions in the life course. Friendships are active in certain periods of our life and then gradually become less significant and meaningful, due to a change in peopleââ¬â¢s circumstances as they enter in stages of the life course, therefore sustaining that relationship becomes difficult. There are a variety of domestic circumstances that can affect friendship. Typically there appears to be changes in peopleââ¬â¢s friendship patterns when they get married. This is because their existing relationships with other single people tends to become less central to their lives and be replaced by other couple friendships (Cohen 1992), this is how couples create a marital relationship in which ââ¬Ëtogethernessââ¬â¢ and mutual involvement is paramount. Along with this is sharing leisure and sociability therefore maintaining friendships with those who are single becomes difficult. Not only that but divorce can also dramatically alter friendship, for men the effect may be less who will continue to be involved in the same work and leisure activities whereas women with children, their friendships patterns will alter more significantly due a change in their social, economic and domestic circumstances (Milardo 1987). Similarly shifts can occur in friendship when children are born, the aspects of family life will affect the space available for friendship. Old activities that were once shared between two people often become problematic, especially in the early years of childhood Having children can be a very demanding job, therefore less time is left for developing new and servicing old friendships, and thus gradually old friends who are at different stages of their life course become less involved and are replaced by others who share a similar social position. In the same way, caring for an elderly relative can constrain the freedom for sociability. However, we can also see how gender is affected within childcare which affects the space for friendship. As many women have less extensive social participation, and their character of domestic and paid labour, therefore there is less opportunity to develop social ties. Whereas, men tend to have more time and financial resources to devote to sociability because of their role within the domestic and paid division of labour. Equally, as people enter old age and retirement this can also affect the opportunities for friendship. For some retirement may present them with more time to spend with friends, with the absence of work commitments. However others the reduced financial circumstances mean the engagement through social activities is limited, and the pool of social contacts is reduced through employment. Friendships can also alter due to a change in a personââ¬â¢s social location. For instance, if someone was to gain a promotion at work it could affect their friendship ties. Not only that but with the idea of work as someone is in a different position within a hierarchy, they may have authority over others and thus increased earning capacity and an alteration of their life-style, maintaining existing friends becomes difficult especially as friendship is seen to be based on equality. Despite friendship being based on liking and trust and not on status hierarchy or difference, in essence the friendships becomes less active, and new friends who lead similar life-styles and of similar status replace old friends. A personââ¬â¢s work situation affects the opportunities they have in meeting others as well as the resources of time, money and energy they have for sociability (Allen 1989). The demands and organization of a personââ¬â¢s work can also pattern their friendships both inside and outside the workplace. For example, different shift patterns, different levels of physical and mention exertion and different times being away from home call affect and individualââ¬â¢s capability and willingness to participate in sociability. Nevertheless, it may be thought that due advances in technology, email and social networking increase the possibility of forming friendships with face to face conversation being absent. Yet, despite these new forms of communication, we are still more likely to have closer ties with people who live in closer geographical proximity to us. Friendship is dynamic; it may become deeper or fade as we enter different stages of the life course nonetheless as Pahl claims it does change meaning and functions throughout the life course. Patterns of peopleââ¬â¢s friendships throughout the life course are structured around, peopleââ¬â¢s social and economic circumstances which influence their opportunities for social involvement. Different aspects of structural location such as work situation and domestic situation alter during the life course and change the meaning and function of friendshipââ¬â¢s. Friendship is also linked to broader social and economic factors, and individualââ¬â¢s immediate social environment influences who they come in contact with and thus who they build friendships with. The next day when George had awakened from his bloody beating, Slim had told George that Curleys father had canned the both of them. Slim and George were trying to figure out what they were going to do. George remembered that he told the old couple that he would take the farm. When he told Slim about the idea of the farm, Slim agreed and they tried to come up with the money. Between George, Slim, and Candy, they only had 500 dollars, which included what they had already sent to the old couple. They thought and thought of an idea to get another 100 dollars, but there was no possible way they could. They had all packed up and they were ready to be on their way. They began to walk out into the forest and to see what new obstacles they would have to overcome. George and Slim heard hooves off in the distance. All of the sudden they saw two men on horses in the distance. One of the men was white and the other was black. When they got near, George and Slim realized that it was Candy and Crooks! When they got off the horses, Crooks took out 100 dollars and handed it to George. They all were jumping and yelling with happiness. George looked up and yelled we finally did it, we finally did! They made camp and the next day George mailed off the letter with the rest of the money. With the four men on horses they were on their way to their new life. They reached the farm a few days later to greet the old couple. They looked around and the place needed a fixing up, but to them the place was a dream farm. They realized that they had overcome their challenges and they were ready to start a new beginning.

The 13 Best Campus Jobs for College Students
The 13 Best Campus Jobs for College Students SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips There are a lot of benefits to having a job while youââ¬â¢re a college student (besides just the extra cash, of course). Some of the most convenient jobs available are located right on campus. In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll do a deep dive into the benefits of having a job in college before talking about exactly what you should look for to find good jobs for college students. Then Iââ¬â¢ll get to the good stuff: a list of the best jobs out there and how to get one for yourself. Read on to learn more! Why Should You Have a Student Job, Anyways? So maybe youââ¬â¢re still on the fence when it comes to deciding whether a student job is right for you. Itââ¬â¢s not a decision to be taken lightly - getting a job while youââ¬â¢re a full-time student isnââ¬â¢t for everyone - but there are definitely a ton of benefits to working while youââ¬â¢re in college. Here are the main benefits of finding a side gig. Make That Cash Perhaps the most obvious benefit that comes with a student job is, well, a paycheck. This money can help cover your personal expenses, pay for textbooks and transport, or even go towards tuition, room, and board. This can ease the financial burden of attending college, and maybe reduce the amount of money you owe in loans in the long run. The amount you can make will vary depending on a few important factors, including: Your hourly rate. Some jobs may start at minimum wage, but other positions that require more specialized work (think lab jobs, tutoring, etc.) could pay much more. The number of hours you work. You donââ¬â¢t want your schoolwork and extracurriculars to suffer, but you likely want to maximize the number of hours you work when possible. It'll take some trial and error to figure out how often you want to work. The average working student puts in about 19 hours a week, but you don't necessarily have to work as many hours to reap the benefits of a job. No matter your hourly salary or average number of hours per week, youââ¬â¢ll still be bringing in extra money (which is much better than no money). Itââ¬â¢ll be up to you to figure out the balance between your school work and your job. You can read more about this balance by checking out our post on deciding whether to get a student job. Meet New People This is an especially relevant benefit for first-time college students who are looking to make new friends. If you get a job on campus, youââ¬â¢re likely to meet all sorts of people who you already go to school with.Depending on where you work, you may even get to meet university faculty, staff, or grad students. This could be a great opportunity for professional networking. I had a pretty awesome cafe job in college where I met a lot of new friends. I also interacted with professors, TAs, and graduate students regularly. Itââ¬â¢s unlikely I would have been able to meet these people in any other setting. Build Your Resume College is the time when most people start to think about building professional experience.Good jobs for college students will help you develop skills and establish a professional reputation. You could start by looking for jobs that align with your professional goals and/or interests - for example, working in a lab in your academic department. If this isnââ¬â¢t a good option, don't worry! You can still build marketable skills for your resume with almost any job. Any leadership, management, or technical skill experiences, in particular, can help you get jobs in the future. Do Better in School This seems counterintuitive - how could a part-time job help you do better in school? It turns out that students who work about 12-15 hours a week do just as well or even better in school than those who donââ¬â¢t have a job. It may be that students who have student jobs are more ambitious or organized to begin with, which could explain why they tend to have better grades.Conversely, getting a job might force you to schedule your time a bit more wisely. Thereââ¬â¢s an old saying - if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it - that might apply in this case. Have Fun Not all good jobs for college students might be a blast, but if youââ¬â¢re working with a bunch of your peers, youââ¬â¢ll probably have a pretty good time while you work. A student job can serve as a great opportunity to socialize, and even to get away from schoolwork for a while. Back to my collegejob - not only did I have fun working with friends, but we also had parties and other get-togethers with co-workers after weââ¬â¢d closed up shop. Campus jobs can be pretty casual work environments, so itââ¬â¢s often appropriate (depending on the setting, of course) to take advantage of that in order to have a little fun. The Best On-Campus Student Jobs Nowthat we've talked about reasons to get a job, we can get to the list you've been waiting for: the best jobs you can find on campus.Although this list includes the most common positions available at schools, it isn't exhaustive - if you find a job you like that isn't listed here, it doesn't mean it's not a good opportunity! If you are interested in getting a student job, check out these greatpositions to look for. Administrative Assistant There are so many different places for a student to work as an admin assistant on campus. You find these jobs in places like libraries, academic departments, and admissions offices. Some busy professors might also seek personal admin assistants. These jobs probably wonââ¬â¢t be very high-paying, but they tend to be low-stress and pretty casual. Ifyou work in an academic department that youââ¬â¢re interested in, you'll have the opportunity to develop some valuable professional connections. Barista I know this is the stereotypical college student job, but hear me out! If youââ¬â¢re a coffee lover (or even if you arenââ¬â¢t), working as abaristaat a college cafe can be a fun, rewarding, and social job. Working as abaristais good training if you want a supplemental part-time job after you graduate. Also, you might even get free coffee at work - it doesnââ¬â¢t get much better than that. Who doesn't want to learn to make a latte like this? Fitness Instructor Many colleges and universities have on-campus fitness centers that offer different types of classes, including yoga, pilates, Zumba, spin, and more. If youââ¬â¢re certified to teach any of these classes, and you enjoy exercise to begin with, you should definitely check this out. Fitness instructor jobs tend to pay a lot per hour, although you may not have the opportunity to work many hours per week. A huge benefit of a job like this? You can kill two birds with one stone: get your exercise in while you work! IT Assistant Schools always need IT help for students and faculty. Youââ¬â¢d need some pre-existing skills in order to get a job like this, but if youââ¬â¢re good with computers or have even done IT work in the past, this would be a great fit. Check out your school's IT center for more info. Library Assistant Working in a library may not be very exciting, but itââ¬â¢s generally quiet and low-stress. Downtime is common, which means you can do homework and reading. There are also opportunities to interact with new and interesting people, especially if you chat with students and professors who are working on research.I worked in a library in college and made friends with an elderly librarian who liked to teach me words in Japanese! As "boring" as the library might be, you never know who you'll meet and what you'll learn. Lifeguard If youââ¬â¢re certified as a lifeguard, itââ¬â¢s a no-brainer to check out lifeguarding jobs. This suggestion only applies, obviously, if your school has pools on campus. Becauselifeguarding is a pretty specialized skill, you can expect these jobs to pay a bit more than your average student job. Mail Room Assistant Mail rooms areusually located very close to student dorms, which also makes them conveniently located if you need to run to work after you sleep through your alarm. But there are other benefits to working in the mail room - it's agreat way to meet other people on campus, for one. You also may have down time to work on other stuff, like catching up on your reading for classes. Museum Assistant Many colleges and universities have museums on campus, ranging from small specialized collections to huge, well-known galleries. If you're interested in any museum at your school - whether it's a museum of art, Semitic studies, natural history, Egyptology, or comparative zoology (the list goes on and on) - I would recommend stopping by to see if there are any available positions. I can't think of a cooler place to work! Research Assistant Research assistant jobs are great if you want to develop relationships with professors and/or grad students in your department. They're also a good way to explore interests in research and academia. A research assistant job might be very social (i.e. if youââ¬â¢re running research in the social sciences) or pretty solitary (i.e. if youââ¬â¢re working on an independent project in a chem lab). You may also have opportunities to develop very specialized skills, like using particular software programs or running special data analyses. These could serve you well when you apply to jobs in the future, even if they're just interesting things that set you apart from other applicants. Residential Advisor A residential advisor position is a good option for students who feel comfortable interacting with new people, solving social problems, and serving as part of a support network for their peers. Perks and benefits vary from school to school. You might not get paid in cash, but itââ¬â¢s common forresidential advisors to get free housing. In general, working as a residential advisor isn't a huge time commitment. Teaching Assistant (TA) Certain departments (most oftenmath and computer science departments) sometimes hire experienced upperclassmen to work as teaching assistants. This is obviously great teaching experienceand is a good option for students who are looking for a social, high-responsibility job in a subject that they like. It's also a great way to forge professional connections in your field. TAs responsibilities vary widely depending on their experience and the policies of the department and school - some might just grade papers whereas others might hold office hours or lead small classes. Teaching is a big responsibility, but it can also be a lot of fun. Tour Guide This is a very social job and is great for those who want to develop interpersonal and public speaking skills. If you work for the admissions office, youââ¬â¢ll get to interact with hundreds of students and parents that are interested in your school. Thereââ¬â¢s often summer work available, which is great if you want to take classes over the summer. It tends to pay pretty well, and many tour guides get to keep tips! Tutor Depending on what sort of organization you work for, this job may be one of the most lucrative options on this list. My only caveat? Freshmen donââ¬â¢t tend to have a ton of tutoring opportunities (because theyââ¬â¢re at the bottom of the academic totem pole), but as students get older and take more classes, they develop more expertise in theirparticular majors. The more experience you have, the more in demand you'll be, the more money you can make. Because of this, tutoring tends to pay off even more if you stick with it through college (and even after you graduate). How Do You Find Campus Jobs? Excited to start working yet? Like I mentioned earlier, campus jobs tend to be a bit more casual than your average post-grad gig. That being said, there are a lot of things you should know about the process if youââ¬â¢re serious about seeking out a job. Here, Iââ¬â¢ll go over the key things you should know about looking for jobs on your campus. These tips will get you started on the right track. Don't worry, the search won't be this hard. Use Your Personal Connections Your friends, classmates, and peers are all resources. They will be able to offer info on what jobs to check out (and what jobs to stay away from). If you're taking a class with a professor you like, donââ¬â¢t be afraid to approach them about lab or administrative openings. If they donââ¬â¢t have anything available, they could direct you to other professors that may need help. Familiarize Yourself With Campus Resources Chances are your school will have some sort of jobs database available. These databases tend to list both on-campus and off-campus jobs that would be appropriate for students. If youââ¬â¢re not sure how to access this, ask friends or classmates if they know where to find it. If you canââ¬â¢t get good info out of them, reach out to your schoolââ¬â¢s career center for more info. Check this database regularly - jobs on campus fill up fast, so if you see a job listing that interests you, pounce on it! Start the Process Early Campus jobs tend to hire pretty early in the semester, sostart looking for openings a few weeks before the semester starts. If youââ¬â¢re looking at something more specialized - a research assistant position, for example - donââ¬â¢t be afraid to reach out to professors and/or lab managers via email four to sixweeks before the start of the semester. Know Your Work Study Status Many jobs on campus prefer or require students to have federal work-study awards. You can check out your financial aid package to see if you have a work study award, and if so, how much you have available. If you donââ¬â¢t know how to access your financial aid award, call or email your financial aid officer. For more information on federal work study, check out ourcomplete guide to the program. Locking Down the Job You Want So you've checked out somejobs and found a listing that works for you. The next step is actuallygetting the job, right? The following tips will help you get the job you want if you're offered an interview on campus. Your default should be a professional demeanor and business casual attire. You may be able to dress down a bit depending on where/with whom youââ¬â¢re interviewing - for example, if youââ¬â¢re interviewing at a casual cafe with a student manager. Take your cues from your interviewer. If he or she is more personable and casual, you can let your guard down a bit. If he or she is maintaining a very professional distance, you should do the same. Prepare for the standard interview questions, as well as any specialized questions that apply to that specific job. Examples include: Why are you interested in this job? Why do you think you'd be a good fit for this position? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Be prepared for strange interview questions as well. Casual interviewers sometimes ask more unexpected questions as a way to gauge your personality and fit. When I interviewed for an on-campus cafe in college, I was asked some funny questions, including ââ¬Å"If you were a pastry, which onewould you be and why?â⬠If someone asks a creative question, feel free to get creative with your answers. Don't reveal information that's too personal in an interview, no matter how friendly or casual the setting. Topics that you should steer clear of include significant others, complaints about past job experiences, and family issues. Conversely, don't ask your interviewer about personal information- this can be very off-putting. The more practice you can do before an interview - whether you practice with friends or roommates, or you talk to yourself in the mirror - the better. And if you don't get your dream job after your first interview? Don't let that get you down. Almost everyone has experienced at least one professional rejection - sometimes, certain positions have too many qualified applicants. Think of each interview you complete as great practice for the next one you schedule! Interviews, a.k.a. an excuse you'd have to change out of your collegiate sweatpants. What's Next? If you're considering getting a job in college, you're also probably thinking about balancing your budget. Choose one of the two question on counter terrorism policy Essay
Choose one of the two question on counter terrorism policy - Essay Example Counter terrorism strategy has four main pillars with a framework for a comprehensive response to terrorism at an international level. The pillars are preventing individuals from becoming terrorists, protecting civilians and infrastructure by ensuring there is reduced vulnerability to attacks, disrupting support networks for terrorists, managing and minimizing the consequences that may arise in case of a terror attack. Therefore, this strategy requires working at an international level and despite the fact that these measures are a step forward in combating terrorism, countering terrorism still remains a problem due to lack of clearly defined policies. Public Policy Perspective of Counterterrorism Much counterterrorism policies are expressed in prevention terms and not as a precautionary measure.2 Moreover, counter terrorism efforts will constitute all the necessary actions taken by a government in trying to hinder attacks; hence, its formulated policies should try to reflect the goa ls and missions of the government. Therefore, having a future measure can consist of actions such as the distinguishing of practices that involve counter terrorism. There are three main aims that governments have during the outlining of a governmentââ¬â¢s goal in trying to counter the terrorist attacks, which include preventing the escalation of terror attacks, eliminating terrorism and minimizing the damages that might be caused in case of a terror attack. Eliminating terrorist involves destruction of terrorist organizations while actions involved in minimizing damage that may occur in case of an attack include trying to reduce possible future attacks or preventing suicide bombings. The acts of avoiding the spread of both scope of terror attacks and conflicts are key prevention measures for terrorism. In enhancing these policies, most governments preclude organizations from being able to gain certain political achievements such as receiving support from a foreign country. The ne w legislations that we rely on have legal solutions that rely on judgment placed on judgesââ¬â¢ hands.3 The policies should be made based on actions that are accepted in the society. This error requires overspecialization of counterterrorism officers in order to diminish impaired judgments against them.4 One of the democratic measures that a government can take is understanding the various factors that motivate and process radicalization; hence, it is important to acknowledge the fact that acknowledging the difficulty of eliminating a threat is the first step in developing strategies for combating terrorism. International Relation Perspective of Counterterrorism grand Strategy The states have a variety of ways in which they can tackle terrorism on an international system. For instance, EU member states have tried to put measures that will combat terrorism in their EU level. Moreover, governments face a number of challenges within the strategies they use for combating terrorism. T he EU coordinators have a setback, which are unable to coordinate complex areas of counterterrorism due to diverse structures.5 For instance, Europe had a surge in the national terrorism when it combined with other groups such as IRA from
